The fruits are eaten fresh or made into jams, fools, juices or pies.

In France and Italy they are used as a base for liqueurs and are a popular flavoring for sorbets and other desserts.

In Brittany they are often used as a flavoring for crêpes, and in the Vosges and the Massif Central bilberry tart (tarte aux myrtilles) is a traditional dessert. In Romania they are used as a base for a liqueur called afinată – the name of the fruit in Romanian is afină.

In Scandinavia, they are eaten fresh or made into jams and other dishes, including bilberry pie (Finnish mustikkapiirakka, Swedish blåbärspaj) and blåbärssoppa, a bilberry soup served hot or cold.

In Iceland they are popularly eaten with skyr (a cultured dairy product similar to yoghurt).

In Poland, they are either eaten fresh (mixed with sugar), put into sweet buns as a filling (known as a jagodzianka and a popular bakery product during the summer), or used to make jams (known for their health benefits in the treatment of diarrhoea). They are sometimes served with sweet smetana (a soured cream).

Beta-Carotene.

Beta-carotene is one of the pigments in a group of red, orange and yellow pigments called carotenoids. Beta-carotene and other carotenoids provide approximately 50% of the vitamin A needed in the American diet. Beta-carotene is present in fruits, vegetables and grains. It can also be manufactured in laboratories.

Beta-carotene is used to prevent certain cancers, heart disease, cataracts, osteoarthritis and senile macular degeneration (AMD).

Acerola: Regenerates the lens, softens it and rids it of its opacity

Acerola (Malpighia gabra) is a small fleshy fruit that grows from a shrub originally in Central America. Acerola is a fruit very rich in vitamin C, one of the richest that nature offers us. They are also rich in other antioxidants such as carotenoids, tannins and phenols.

Lutein: Protects the eye from aging.

Good nutrition is important to keep your eyes healthy and functioning their best throughout your lifetime. One very important eye nutrients that may reduce your risk for macular degeneration and cataracts have names: Lutrin. You may not be familiar with: lutein (LOO-teen).

Lutein are one types of carotenoids (kuh-RAH-teh-noids), which are yellow to red pigments found widely in vegetables and other plants. Though lutein is considered a yellow pigment, in high concentrations it appears orange-red.

Zeaxanthin: Filters harmful UV rays, fights aging.

Relationship with diseases of the eye
Several observational studies have provided preliminary evidence for high dietary intake of foods including lutein and zeaxanthin with lower incidence of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), most notably the Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS2).

Because foods high in one of these carotenoids tend to be high in the other, research does not separate effects of one from the other.Three subsequent meta-analyses of dietary lutein and zeaxanthin concluded that these carotenoids lower the risk of progression from early stage AMD to late stage AMD.

Cochrane review of 19 studies from several countries concluded that dietary supplements containing zeaxanthin and lutein have little to no influence on the progression of AMD.

In general, there remains insufficient evidence to assess the effectiveness of dietary or supplemental zeaxanthin or lutein in treatment or prevention of early AMD

Astaxanthin: Eliminates eye fatigue, improves micro-circulation

Astaxanthin is taken by mouth for treating Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, stroke, high cholesterol, liver diseases, age-related macular degeneration (age-related vision loss), and preventing cancer.

Zinc: Helps prevent and fight AMD.

Zinc is an essential mineral for our body. It is widely distributed in different foods. Our body contains 2 to 3 gr. of zinc. More than 85% of the total zinc present in our body deposits in the muscles, bones, testicles, hair, nails and pigmented tissues of the eye.
